Well, here it is! Our first edition of The Buffalo Burgee Bugle.  Our aim is to use this publication to inform all our valued members, visitors and potential members of what we are up to, where we are going and what is planned for the month.  If you would like to make any contributions, advertise anything yachting related or assist us in any way, we welcome your input!

Commodores Report

A hearty welcome to all our new members.  Please do not hesitate to ask any committee members if you are needing any information.  They are here to assist you.

To those members who have paid their club fees, THANK YOU!

Please remember that during this period of unsettled weather, Werner will still be manning the bar.  Please make use of this facility.  If any members or their colleagues would like to sponsor Friday night snacks, kindly contact Tanya on 072 095 1559 to arrange.

Special thanks to Shiela Allwright, John Senior and Gary Midlane for their generous donation of R1000 each for repairs to the roof.

31 August            Wed                      Wednesday Dinner

Our Wednesday evenings are growing in  popularity and the Commodore has issued a challenge to each member to bring along at least two visitors to our Wednesday dinners!  At only R60 per head for a delicious home cooked meal, there simply is no better value.  As the regulars already know, our bar prices also take a lot of beating!

If you have any ideas for future events at the BRYC, we welcome your ideas.  If you know anyone who would be prepared to perform at an event at a discounted fee, we would be truly appreciative.  Our coffers are running very low at the moment and our committee is faced with a monumental task to raise sufficient funds to keep the BRYC running efficiently.

Meet the brand new BRYC Committee

Gary Midlane – Commodore – Gary is married to Colleen and he has been sailing for twenty years.  Gary loves sailing and owns a L26, El Marie.  He works at Midlanes Sleep Shop.

Tony van der Merwe – Vice  Commodore –  Tony has been married to Eleanor for the past 34 years and together they have three children.  He loves the sea so sailing was his next step after the ski boat.  Tony is a soldier by profession but has been self employed for the past 23 years in the vehicle restoration business.  Tony owns his own yacht and sails regularly.

Deon Mc Intyre – Rear Commodore Sailing – Deon is married to Cathy and they have two daughters.  Soon his gorgeous girls will be completing a competent crew course.  Deon owns a 24 ft Vivacity.  He works at Shones Electrical as a projects manager.

Werner van Wyk  – Rear Commodore – House and Grounds – Werner is married to Dawn and they have one daughter.  He owned his own computer shops for ten years.  Werner has never sailed before but he loves boats hence his decision to buy Orca.  He is busy upgrading her for charters.  Werner is also our friendly barman at the club!

Colleen Midlane is married to our Commodore – isn’t she a lucky girl!?  Colleen lovingly caters for us all along with Eleanor, our VC’s wife.  Colleen is also pretty good on a boat and is our secretary.

Cathy Mc Intyre is married to Deon, our RC Sailing and runs a very tight ship when it comes to the clubs finances!  She is a force to be reckoned with.  Cathy is employed at Farmarama and is also mom to two stunning daughters.Tanya Schenk – Rear Commodore – Social – Tanya is married to Bruce and they have three children.  The sailing bug only bit recently and she is presently completing her Day Skippers Ticket. Tanya loves sailing and spends most of her time on Adios, a Fast 42.

     Walk on Mooring

The committee hires the one available walk on mooring at R150.00 per day.  This mooring is available to club members free of charge in the event of members wanting to carry out repairs etc.  We do request that you liaise with our RC Sailing to confirm the mooring is available and that you make every effort to not exceed a couple of days on this mooring.

Sub-Committee – Racing

The BRYC has formed the above committee and its members are Graham Wentworth, Stuart Afflick, Roy Crossley and Byron Ravenscroft.  They are currently hard at work putting together a Spring, Summer and Winter series along with handicap systems, boat categories, race rules and prizegiving plans.  All details of the future racing series will be put up at the club and discussed at Wednesday dinner evenings.  Watch this space!!!!

Social Sailing Calendar

You will notice that we have a couple of fun sails planned for August prior to the opening of the season.  This allows us all to warm up, get fit, once again familiarise ourselves with our boats and get ready for the racing programme.  Deon Mc Intyre, our RC Sailing, will be organising these sailing events.  We encourage all members to join in, even if you haven’t got a boat, jump on one of your friends boats or come along and watch the silliness that goes with these events!  Please contact Deon on 082 490 0892 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to confirm your participation and / or book for meals on those dates.

Opening of the Season

I have met with the ELYC and they are very excited about joining us on some future events and working together with us.  I am sure we can form a healthy reciprocal relationship with them.  We also look forward to supporting them in their future events and getting to know them all a little better.  ELYC have already set their dates for the Opening of the Season and we have posted notices at the BRYC with these details.  We had hoped to join forces with them on this event, but due to time constraints, ours will now be held in September.  Let us support and join ELYC at their Opening of Season and we extend an invitation to them to join us!

Equipment / Donations Requested

Eish, stuff is so expensive these days so we are appealing to you all for the following goodies.  You never know when someone may be looking at clearing out some stuff they no longer need and if we need it, please throw it our way?????

Notice Board – we are looking for a whiteboard to put up behind the bar to keep members informed of upcoming events and regatta results etc.  If you have one hanging about you need to find a home for, look no further!!!

Blackboard – we would like to put up a blackboard on the outside of the building to remind all our members of upcoming events and also let you know what the weather is doing etc.

White Fabric – The BRYC has the potential to be a stunning venue to hire but we need to drape the back wall just to pretty the place up a bit and this will then make it easier for us to hire it out.  We need a substantial amount of white fabric that we drape all along the back wall.

Furniture – wow, we need so much!!!  Our outside tables and benches are very tired and need to be replaced.  We also want to buy some nice chairs for inside.  We have had a chair fund running for ages and there is only about R700 in the kitty.

I know this is a long list, but if you don’t ask, you don’t receive, hey?

When is our birthday?

We are appealing to all members, especially the stalwarts!!!! We are trying to establish when the BRYC was formed.  I am sure we won’t find an exact date, but we would like you to search in your memory banks so we can establish a month and then decide on a date to make an annual celebration of the BRYC birthday!

Obituary Peter Jakobi

By Graham Wentworth

It is with sadness that we heard of the passing of our member, Peter Jacobi.  Pete was an active sailing member in the early days of the club.  He then moved to Durban to further his career as a freelance photographer.  In 2007 he returned to East London on his boat Mr Noah.  Although he had a very painful illness that affected his joints, Pete always kept a smile on his face and was never shy of a clever chirp.  He used to say to me, obviously in pain, after limping up the stairs from his boat, “morning Captain!  I see you still have that parrot on your shoulder.”  In reply I would say, “morning Pete, I see you still have that thorn in your foot.”  Our condolences go to his family and his son, John.

‘Let passion fill your sails and reason be your rudder.’

Fair winds Pete.

Help us grow the BRYC!!!

In order to grow our precious club and increase membership, thereby increasing money in our coffers thereby improving our club,.......  we need your help.  It would be greatly appreciated if you could help us market the BRYC.  Now, don’t sigh or groan, its not that difficult!!  It’s actually quite easy!!!  Email costs virtually nothing so we are asking you to please forward this email newsletter to all your contacts on your email account!  It’s simple, easy, fast and cost effective and your brief investment of time could manifest great results.  If it is at all possible, please could you also sms your friends and family and colleagues too!  Without you, our precious members,  our assets, we cannot grow the BRYC family.  Your assistance is more appreciated than you.

Wenties Words

A monthly column by Graham Wentworth

Race Day – 21 July 2011

There were only two entries, Unmatched and Schenktenk (Adios).  The slower of the two boats took it upon themselves to start six minutes in front of the faster Unmatched.  The course was a beat to the Osner transit in 20 knots.  It was partly cloudy and warm over Gordonia and the far interior.  Scattered thundery showers over the deep, deep sea and low cloud cover over the grain elevator compared to the yacht club.  At the turning mark, the slower boat prejudiced the faster boat by turning early onto the downwind leg.  The only boat to fly a spinnaker was the much smaller and faster one.  Superior boat handling was seen at the harbour wall when the faster boat put in three spectacular broaches to avoid contact with a pod of dolphins feeding off the harbour wall.  The end result was one of six love to the smaller, faster boat.  Skippers and crew (all accounted for, I think) then returned to the pub where Werner did a good job of keeping the beers in good shape while all were at sea.

See you all in the deep, deep sea!

Graham

Adios Amigos

Until next time, the  brand new editor of the brand new Buffalo Burgee Bugle, bids you a fond farewell!!!

See you on the water!
