SAS Requirements
SAS Skippers Courses_SailingSAS Certificates of Competence (Skipper’ Tickets) Inland Waters Skipper to Yachtmaster Ocean

To skipper a sailing boat over 9 meters in South Africa you are required by law to hold an appropriate Certificate of Competence.  SA Sailing is the only body that SAMSA has authorised to issue Certificates of Competence for sailing boats. 

The Certificates of Competence are:

  • Day Skipper:  The holder is qualified to skipper a sail boat at sea from sunrise to sunset    Local waters are defined as 15 nautical miles from his home port, or 25 miles from his home port provided he is no more than 15 nautical miles from an approved safe haven.
  • Local Waters Skipper:  The holder is qualified to skipper a sail boat at sea by day or by night in the local waters as defined for day skipper.
  • Coastal Skipper:  The holder is qualified to skipper a sail boat on any coastal passage within 40 nautical miles of the coast by day or by night.
  • Yachtmaster Offshore:  The holder is qualified to skipper a sail boat on any extended or ocean passage.
  • Yachtmaster Ocean:  This qualification is a badge of honour which indicates that the holder has mastered celestial navigation.

Competent Crew

RequirementSailing Competent Crew Course   No practical experience but an interest in sailing.

Duration:           4 Weeks (Two Evening and a Saturday or Sunday half day practical per week)

Where:              Buffalo River Yacht Club, East London.

This is a beginners' course that concentrates on practical sailing. Beginners learn how to become active, contributing crew members. The course begins in the East London Port with practical exposure to the parts of the yacht, fittings and safety equipment. The following weeks include basic boat-handling, docking sailing to either Nahoon or Cove Rock (Determinded by the direction of the wind).

SAS Day Skipper

SAS Day Skipper Course_SailingRequirements:    Some practical experience or Competent Crew Course desirable

Duration:           4 Weeks (Two Evening and a Saturday or Sunday half say practical per week)

Where:              Buffalo River Yacht Club, East London.

This course is for those who have completed the Competent Crew course or for those who have had sufficient previous yachting experience. The course teaches the necessary skills required to skipper a small cruising yacht safely by day in tidal waters.

This course lays down the foundation of navigation for day skippers and also covers the essential skills of close quarter manoeuvring (sailing and motoring on and off the dock, man over board etc) and offshore skippering skills. Students learn to take charge of the vessel and each student acts as skipper on a short passage.

SAS Coastal Skipper

SAS Coastal Skipper CourseRequirements:    Day Skipper Certificate

Duration:           4 Weeks (Two Evenings and a Saturday or Sunday half day practical per week)

Where:              Buffalo River Yacht Club, East London.

This course covers all the practical and theoretical knowledge for the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore examinations. The syllabus for both these courses is similar.The Yachtmaster Offshore course follows on from the Coastal Skippers course.

Mile Builder East London to Port Elizabeth

Upon request we offer a "Mile Builder" trip to Port Elizabeth from East London and up the Transkei Coast.

A one way trip to Port Elizabeth is priced at R 750-00 and a return at R 1 000-00. All costs are covered while on board. Once in port, independent accommodation and meals must be arranged by the crew while waiting for a weather window to return with. A minimum of three crew are required for a trip.

Generally, the trip starts on a Friday evening arriving in Port Elzabeth on Saturday evening. The return trip leaves Port Elizabeth Sunday morning and we arrive on Monday morning early. Beware, work on Monday may be a little tough, but you did spend the whole weekend sailing!!!
